Winter horse barn prep tips for cold Texas weather

Winter Bucket Care: A Working-Barn Checklist

A Texas cold snap can turn ordinary chores into extra work. Make the water check, spare-bucket plan and hardware inspection part of the routine before the freeze arrives.

Start with the equipment you already have

Empty and inspect buckets before cold weather. Look beneath the rim, around handle attachments and at mounting points. Set aside structural cracks, sharp edges or loose connections. A product’s cold-weather positioning does not remove the need to inspect it.

Keep a clean spare ready

A spare bucket makes it easier to swap out a frozen or dirty container while maintaining access to clean water. Check actual conditions throughout the day; a clock-based refill habit alone does not tell you whether the water is usable.

Thaw without turning the bucket into the repair job

  • Move frozen equipment to a suitable thawing area when practical.
  • Do not use a hammer, sharp tool, open flame or improvised heating element on a plastic bucket.
  • Use heating equipment only when it is approved for the container and installed according to the relevant instructions.
  • Manage spilled water so the chore route does not become an ice patch.
  • Reinspect the bucket and its hardware after thawing or a hard impact.

What the KD-120 adds

The KD-120 Platinum bucket has a 20-quart capacity, a perimeter metal reinforcement ring and enclosed crimped handle ends. Those are specific construction features—not a promise that the bucket cannot crack or the ring cannot fail.

Read the product-specific Bucket Promise for normal-use coverage and exclusions. Compare it with the everyday KD-120E in the Silver and Platinum guide.

Make the handoff clear

Tell the next person which containers were swapped, where the clean spares are and whether any equipment has been removed from service. If a horse’s drinking changes significantly, contact your veterinarian rather than treating a bucket change as the whole answer.
