K&D EQUIPMENT CARE
Product Care & Maintenance Guide
Clean the surfaces that touch feed and water. Check the parts that carry the load. Put damaged gear aside before the next chore.
Use this guide for buckets, feeders, forks, grooming tools, dog bowls and storage gear. Product-specific instructions take priority, especially for electrical equipment and products made by other brands.
A routine that fits barn chores
At each use or refill
Check for leftover feed, slime, sharp edges and loose hardware. Inspect water availability and cleanliness during chore rounds. Clean visibly soiled equipment before reuse.
During your regular deep clean
Remove detachable rings and inserts. Clean beneath rims and around mounting points. Inspect handles, attachment points, tines, hinges and latches.
After an impact or before storage
Empty and examine the gear after a hard drop, kick or trailer shift. Clean and dry equipment before nesting, packing or putting it away.
Cleaning frequency depends on use, weather and contamination. A weekly calendar is no reason to leave dirty feed or water equipment in service until cleaning day. Keep a clean spare so animals retain access to water while you wash.
How to clean buckets and feeders
- Empty completely. Remove old feed, bedding and debris. Take off removable accessories according to their instructions.
- Loosen residue. Rinse with comfortably warm water. Let stuck feed soften rather than scraping plastic with a sharp tool.
- Scrub all contact surfaces. Use mild detergent and a soft brush. Work beneath the rim, along the base and around seams. Keep a dedicated brush for feed and water gear, separate from manure tools.
- Rinse thoroughly. Remove detergent and loosened dirt from crevices as well as the main bowl.
- Inspect before returning to use. Check the body, handle and mounting points. Refill clean water equipment promptly; let equipment dry fully before storage.
Cleaning is different from disinfecting
Soap and scrubbing remove dirt; they do not establish that a surface has been disinfected. When disinfection is needed, clean first, then use a product labeled for the intended surface and animal-equipment use. Follow its dilution, contact time, rinsing and drying directions and confirm material compatibility. Never mix cleaning chemicals. For shared equipment after illness, follow your veterinarian's barn biosecurity plan.
Do not assume a tank-cleaning recipe is approved for every K&D product. Ask us before using an unfamiliar chemical, solvent, high heat or dishwasher cycle.
For general water-tank hygiene, see University of Minnesota Extension's water-tank cleaning guidance.
Care by product
| Equipment | Clean here | Inspect here |
|---|---|---|
| Water buckets | Inside wall, bottom, underside of rim and handle recesses. | Cracks, rough edges, handle movement, attachment points and hanger security. |
| KD-121 tub + KD-122 ring | Remove the ring for cleaning; wash its underside and the tub lip before refitting. | Ring seating, cracks around mounting points, U-bolts, backer plates and wall support. |
| Corner feeders and feed pans | Corners, rim and feed residue around fasteners. | Body damage, stable placement and secure mounting where applicable. |
| Forks and rakes | Remove bedding and manure from tines and the head; rinse as needed. | Broken or sharp tines, cracked head, loose connections and a damaged handle. |
| Grooming brushes and tools | Remove hair and dirt, wash compatible surfaces with mild soapy water, rinse and dry before packing. | Loose bristles, sharp teeth, cracks and moisture trapped in the base. |
| KD-138 two-piece dog bowl | Separate and wash both pieces, including the outer water reservoir. | Cracks, fit and debris bridging the reservoir. Refill the reservoir with clean water for the intended ant-resistant setup. |
| Hat boxes, totes and storage gear | Empty, wipe interior and exterior, then dry completely. | Hinges, latches, handles and debris that prevents a clean closure. |
For the KD-138 setup, see the outdoor dog-feeding guide. Keep spilled food and nearby objects from making a bridge to the bowl.
Keep using it, repair it, or replace it?
Clean and monitor
Surface dirt or cosmetic scuffs alone do not tell you the equipment has failed. Clean the item so you can see whether a mark is superficial or a crack.
Ask about a compatible part
A replaceable fork head or approved component may be the right fix when the remaining equipment is sound. Confirm the model and fit before ordering.
Browse replacement partsRemove from service
Stop using gear with sharp broken edges, structural cracks, a loose handle attachment, failed mounting support or a latch that no longer secures its load. Set it aside where it cannot be accidentally reused.
Do not hide a structural crack with tape or improvise a repair at a load-bearing attachment. Send K&D photos of the whole item and the damaged area, its model if known, and your order details for help choosing the next step.
Ask about a part or damaged itemCold weather, sun and storage
- Frozen water: move the bucket to a suitable place to thaw. Do not strike it with a hammer, pry ice out with a sharp tool or expose plastic to an open flame.
- Heaters: do not improvise a heating element or modify a bucket. Use equipment specifically approved for the container and follow both manufacturers' instructions.
- Sun and weather: store unused gear under cover where practical. Check outdoor equipment for cracking, roughness or changes in flexibility before reuse.
- Storage: dry before nesting buckets or closing boxes. Support tools so tines are not carrying stored weight. Keep gear and cords clear of animal contact and walking paths.
- Travel: secure equipment against shifting; do not use a loaded storage box as an improvised tie-down anchor.
Common care questions
Can I put K&D gear in the dishwasher?
Do not assume dishwasher heat or detergent is suitable. Hand washing is the default unless the specific product instructions expressly allow a dishwasher.
What if a bucket still feels slimy after rinsing?
Empty it and scrub all surfaces, including beneath the rim. Rinsing alone may leave a film. If the surface cannot be cleaned thoroughly or is damaged, keep it out of use and contact us.
Should water buckets dry completely before every refill?
Dry thoroughly before storage. For a bucket returning directly to water service, rinse thoroughly and refill with clean water; if you used a disinfectant, follow that product's required rinse and drying instructions first.
Does this guide change warranty coverage?
No. Care advice does not create or extend a warranty. Contact K&D with the model, photos and purchase information so we can review your item under its applicable terms.
How do I choose a replacement bucket?
Use the guided Bucket Matchmaker for a recommendation, or compare models in the horse bucket buying guide.
