How to Keep Ants Out of Dog Food Outside

Keep food clean and break the ants’ path

Remove leftover food after meals, clean crumbs and residue, keep stored kibble sealed, and use a maintained water barrier around the food bowl. A two-piece bowl only helps when the water barrier is actually in place; nesting the pieces dry does not create that barrier.

Set up the KD-138 water barrier

1. Separate and clean the inner bowl and outer base.
2. Place the base on a stable, level surface.
3. Add clean water to the outer reservoir and seat the inner bowl without overflowing it.
4. Put food in the inner bowl. Keep grass, kibble and other debris from bridging the water gap.
5. Check the water level during use, especially outside in warm weather. Refresh it and clean both pieces regularly.

Ant-resistant does not mean ant-proof. Water level, debris, placement and local conditions affect results. A bowl does not eliminate an ant colony.

The outdoor feeding routine

• Feed in a spot away from active ant trails.
• Pick up leftovers when the meal is finished; keep fresh drinking water available separately.
• Wash the bowl and remove spilled food around its base.
• Keep the food container closed and wipe residue from its outside.
• For travel, empty, clean and dry both bowl pieces before packing; rebuild the water barrier at the next stop.

If ants still reach the food

Check for an empty reservoir, a tilted base, or a bridge of debris. Move the feeding station away from an active trail and clean the surrounding area. For a persistent infestation, seek local pest-management guidance. Keep pesticides out of food and water bowls and follow any product label’s pet precautions.
