Why I Still Believe in What My Dad Built

Some people grow up with bedtime stories. I grew up with horse trailers, early mornings, and buckets full of feed.

My name’s K.R. Fomby, and while I may sign the checks today, the roots of K&D Equestrian go way deeper than a business title. They run through the racetracks of Texas and New Mexico. Through the dusty trails my sisters and I rode with my dad in our Pony Express team, the “Poor Boys.” Through the first time I ever swung a leg over Nugget — the pole-bending legend that took me to a national championship at just six years old.

I guess you could say we didn’t just grow up around horses — we grew up because of them.

My dad, Ken, didn’t set out to start a company. He set out to solve a problem. The gear available back in the day just wasn’t holding up. Buckets cracked. Forks snapped. Feed tubs flipped. And if you knew my dad, you knew he wasn’t about to let junk tools slow him down. A toolmaker by trade, he got to work — and just like that, the first molds for K&D Equestrian were born in a little Texas shop out of necessity and a whole lot of stubborn pride.

Everything we build today still honors that same principle: strength and durability come first. Fancy colors? Nice. But if it can’t hold up to a 1200 lb gelding kicking it at 6 a.m., we’re not interested.

We’ve come a long way since those first buckets, but the heart of what we do hasn’t changed. Every single K&D product is still tested at our F-Bar Ranch in Gainesville, Texas — by people who ride, feed, muck, and hustle. Just like we always have.

“We’re not just making barn gear. We’re making tools for horsemen — by horsemen.” — K.R. Fomby Sr.

I’m proud to carry on what my dad started. He built a company that isn’t just about equipment — it’s about reliability. About taking care of your animals and yourself. About gear that gets it done — no excuses, no weak spots.
